VARIOUS STUFF - PHOTOS OF HUDDERSFIELD NARROW CANAL in Mossley & Saddleworth - 01
BACK TO LOCAL PHOTO INDEX

The Huddersfield Canal which joins Ashton to Huddersfield passes through Mossley and Saddleworth
before reaching the tunnel under the Pennines at Standedge. Here are a few of my photos of the canal
as it passes through the area, shown from west to east.  For a history of the canal and story of its restoration
have a look at the Huddersfield Canal Society website

Huddersfield Narrow Canal Stalybridge
This first photo is actually outside Mossley but it makes a good starting point, showing the newly built section of canal through Stalybridge town centre.

Heyrod, to the west of Mossley near the site of the now demolished Hartshead Power Station. I assume the remains of the structure above the canal was once part of the power station complex.

Lock and bridge west of Mossley. The river Tame is next to the canal for some distance here, being just behind the trees to the left.

Wharf Cottage lock, Mossley. New houses are being built on the land to the left where disused mills have been demolished. St Johns Church is on the skyline.

Here's a more up to date photo of the same scene, though on a much wetter day! The new houses have been built and Carrhill Mill (the large brick building on the photo above) has been demolished. But the Mossley skyline remains the same...

The same boat continues its journey east. Just above the front of the boat the retaining wall of a garden has collapsed blocking the towpath - May 2008

Looking down to the canal as it passes through the Roaches area of Mossley. Note the small aquaduct near the trees to the left where the canal crosses the River Tame, and a narrow boat passing the new houses.
