And this is at the nearby 633m trig point at Kinder Low.
Many trips over Kinder begin or end in the village of Hayfield, which is where the famous 'mass trespass' started in 1932 which ultimately led to public access being won over Kinder and other areas of the Peaks. This is Kinder Reservoir in Hayfield.
Heading up William Clough from Hayfield to Kinder.
The other main starting point or destination for walkers over Kinder is Edale, starting point of the Pennine Way. This is looking down from Kinder to the Hope Valley and Edale
perhaps Kinder's most famous feature is the downfall. Depending on conditions this can be a trickle, a waterfall, a sheet of ice or in a strong westerly wind as seen here it becomes more of a fountain!
This close up shows the water blown back from the downfall freezing on the rocks and grass
Frozen river Kinder at the top of the downfall. These scattered rocks are not pebbles, to get an idea of the scale notice the two walkers at the top of the picture!
Heading up Kinder on the Pennine Way. Much of the path round the western edge is now well paved but even so there are still boggy areas to cross.
This view is approaching a cloud covered Kinder from South Head, giving an idea of conditions in a wet spell with thick black peat waiting to swallow your boots. |
|
A compass and map are essential in conditions like this. Even when trying to stick to the main paths it can be easy to loose your bearings - I know, I've done it and would still be there now if I hadn't had a compass!
A view from a similar spot, but this time you can actually see something - looking to Edale Rocks.
After all those bleak and wintery pictures, here's a summer scene towards Kinder taken from above 'Peep o Day' near Hayfield. |
