VARIOUS STUFF - AIRCRAFT WRECKS IN THE PEAK DISTRICT
BACK TO PEAK DISTRICT PHOTO INDEX

Many aircraft have come to grief on the hills of the Peak District, especially during the Second World War. These are the remains of a US Airforce Liberator which came down on Mill Hill in October 1944, fortunately the crew survivied.

At Higher Shelf Stones are the remains of an American Superfortress which crashed in November 1948. Sadly in this case the 8 man crew were not so fortunate and the spot is marked by wreaths and stones crosses.

Another view of the scattered wreck at Higher Shelf Stones on the edge of Bleaklow.

Information on these and many more accidents can be found in Dark Peak Aircraft Wrecks vols 1 and 2 by Ron Collier.
