VARIOUS STUFF - PHOTOS AROUND GREAT LANGDALE - Sept 2011

After my morning walk in the Langdale Pikes on 5th September (see here) and a quick pint to dry out in the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel I set out for an afternoon walk to Cold Pike. This is the bleak view heading down Oxendale.

Looking back to Great Langdale. After a wet morning at least it had stopped raining, well for now.

Climbing higher alongside Browney Gill.

A glimpse of Great Langdale as I entered the low cloud. From this point on the walk ahead was in very poor visibility.

I headed to the bottom of Crinkle Crags with no view at all in the low cloud, then took shelter as a torrential downpour passed over. As this cleared the cloud lifted and I could see my target, Cold Pike - seen here across the boggy moors.

By the time I reached the summit of Cold Pike the cloud had come down again, it was raining and so windy it was hard to stand. This is the summit.

The view from Cold Pike, such as it is...

Heading down to the Wrynose Pass.

Three Shires Stone at the summit of the Wrynose Pass, with Cold Pike behind. From here I walked back along the lanes to Great Langdale campsite. It was raining....

And it continued to rain heavily all evening and right through the night. This is the early morning scene on 6th September at Great Langdale campsite with the rain beating down in a strong wind and the road turned into a river.

The waterlogged campsite.

But it was slowly brightening up, this is Great Langdale Beck.

The Stickle Barn pub, while up the hillside the waters of Stickle Ghyll thunder down the waterfalls.

Flooded car park in and lane in Great Langdale.

This is the view from the bus looking back to Great Langdale and a newly created lake!

The scene near Skelwith Bridge as the River Brathay floods the fields.

Floods near Ambleside.
