VARIOUS STUFF - AROUND AMBLESIDE & SKELWITH BRIDGE - 21 November 2009
BACK TO LAKE DISTRICT PHOTO INDEX

After a week of record breaking rain and flooding in the Lake District I had a visit to the Ambleside area on 21 Novermber - another gloomy and wet day. This is at Waterhead with Windemere well above normal levels and evidence it had been even higher.

Below is a photo from the same spot with the lake at more usual levels

An opposite view of the flooded road and debris showing the levels the water had reached.

The River Brathay and waters from Windermere had flooded the area around Rothay Bridge.

The river through Ambleside was back to more usual levels, the heron (bottom right) would not have been there a couple of days earlier when the river was a raging torrent almost upto the top of the wall on the left as can be seen in this photo I've found.

I then had a stroll over the bridlepath to Skelwith Bridge, this is a view on the walk into driving rain.

Skelwith Force.

The River Rothay seen on my walk back to Ambleside. Note the damaged railings and debris on the opposite bank showing the height and force of the floods, the lane I was walking on had obviously also been under deep water judging by the damage and debris.

Back in Ambleside with the Christmas lights (and someone's brake lights) trying to brighten up the gloom.
