Windermere Station on the very cold late morning of 5th December 2010, waiting for a bus to take me to Grasmere. |

Having got the bus, this is the scene in Grasmere. |

Looking to Grasmere (the lake), temperatures were well below freezing all day after a very cold night. |

Grasmere. |

My objective for the afternoon was Seat Sandal, the mountain on the left. Great Rigg is to the right while some of Grasmere's residents hunt for the grass. |

Helm Crag, aka the Lion and the Lamb. |

Heading to Seat Sandal, with Fairfield to the right. |

All the big lakes were covered in fog, this is a zoomed in view to Coniston. |

The way forward through deep powder snow. Luckily for me there were another couple of walkers ahead I could follow their steps but it was still hard going with the snow knee deep in places. |

Looking back to Windermere, the location of the lake can be seen marked out by the fog. Sellafield power station on the coast can be seen to the right. |

Thirlmere and Skiddaw. |

The clarity was fantastic, this is looking west to the snow covered peaks including Scafell Pike and Great Gable. |

On the summit of Seat Sandal looking to the Helvellyn range. |

Fairfield, St Sunday Crag and the frozen Grisedale Tarn below. |

On Seat Sandal in the last of the afternoon sun. |

A patch of fog drifts up from Thirlmere, with Skiddaw behind. |

The sun disappears behind the western fells. |

Making my way down to Grasmere. |

Looking back to Seat Sandal in the dusk light. |

Almost down, with the lights of Grasmere twinkling in the distance. |

But rather than head straight to the village I called in for a couple of pints of Jennings at the Travellers Rest, very welcoming with a real fire. |
