& FLOODS AROUND AMBLESIDE, LAKE DISTRICT - 21 November 2009
BACK TO WEATHER PHOTO INDEX
The lake was reported to have risen over 9 feet above normal, flooding roads and surrounding areas. This is another view at Waterhead.
The waters of Windermere blocking the lower road at Waterhead.
And below, another comparison photo
A zoomed in view to the Wateredge Inn, sadly flooded for the 2nd time in little over a year.
These next photos were taken from the other side of the flood at Waterhead but unlike the Land Rover I'd walked the long way round rather than wade through. The debris on the road shows the water had been much higher.

Another view of the blocked road.
Flooded fields at Ambleside.
A Land Rover passes through a flooded section of the A593 road at Rothay Bridge, Ambleside. The other side of the wall is usually a riverside path.
Another view of the A593 at Rothay Bridge, which was closed though 4x4s and careful drivers were geting through. Some thought better of it and turned back and a couple of others got themselves stuck.
There were plenty of signs of the damage the floods had done, like this collapsed section of road at Rothay Bridge. As can be seen it was raining heavily again.
The River Rothay near Ambleside. Debris and damage on the railing, bridges and trees showed the level the river had got to, flooding all this area.
Another view of the River Rothay, the damaged railings and debris can be seen on the opposite bank giving and idea of how high and fast flowing the water must have been.
