After
the previous night's snow and drifting [see here if
you haven't already !] the road from Mossley to Lydgate had been dug out and
ploughed, though was still very snowy

The way into Lydgate, open again
This photo gives a good idea of the depth of snow which had blocked the road through the night, seen looking back from Lydgate towards Mossley with Alphin Pike on the skyline to the left.
