BACK TO WINTER 2009-2010 PHOTO INDEX


27 December 2009. This is Wellihole, Greenfield in Saddleworth after spells of heavy rain and a sunny Boxing Day had thawed much of the snow which had been around for the previous week. But sheltered areas like this kept a thin cover.

The following day near Lower Swineshaw Reservoir above Stalybridge with the patchy snow cover and plenty of ice.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal through Saddleworth remained frozen, making life slippery for ducks. This ws taken on 29 December.

Above Uppermill on 29 December in a bitterly cold and strong east wind with rime on the grass and the remains of drifts.

The A635 Greenfield to Holmfirth Road at the Saddleworth / West Yorkshire border near Wessenden on 29 December. By that night the road was closed as heavy drifting snow arrived.

There was further snowfall through the 30th December in higher and more eastern areas of Saddleworth and in West Yorkshire. The snow line can be seen here in this view to Standedge from Uppermill on New Years Eve.

On Standedge, 31 December 2009. The change from no snow to deep snow was very sudden with just a slight increase in altitute and strong winds had caused drifting.

Oldham Mountain Rescue provide a very valuable service in snowy weather including covering where normal amblulances can't reach. One of their Land Rovers is out and about on Standedge, 31/12/09.

Later on New Years Eve I was in Harrogate and snow was falling.
