NANTWICH
- went in a couple of busy town centre pubs on a Friday night many years
ago. I remember nowt more than that. OVER
PEOVER - someone I know once lived near quite here so would
very occasionally visit * DOG - Last visit:
mid 90s. Not been here for a long time, quite a large old building with
a mix of locals in the more traditional pub type area with pool etc and a busy
eating area. * PARK GATE - Last visit: early
2000s.An old Sam Smiths country pub with several little rooms. POYNTON
/ HIGHER POYNTON
- long ago had a couple of pints here when passing thru. More recently I knew
someone who lived in Poynton and I lived a few miles away but neither me or him
live in the same place anymore so doubt I'll visit again! * BOARS HEAD
- Last visit: 2005.In Higher Poynton near the Middlewood
way, a large red brick building with lounge and pool room / public bar. 3 ? beers
including Black Sheep and other changing ones such as Landlord and similar. Good
cheap food, always seems busy with locals and others walking and cycling in the
area. * BULLS HEAD - Last visit: 2004. Only
been once but liked it, a Boddingtons pub on the main road with several little
rooms, a busy local atmosphere and a couple of good guest beers. * FARMERS
ARMS - Last visit: early 90s.a Robinsons pub
went to once long ago, can't remember it other that it was quite a large open
room and a youngish crowd. * MINERS ARMS - Last
visit: mid 90s. Out in the country near the canal, only been once, sat
outside, don't remember what it was like or what the beer was. PRESTBURY
- one of many places in the Macc area I'd infrequently find myself when a kind
hearted/gullible mate would drive a few of us round for a few pints. *
ADMIRAL RODNEY - Last visit: mid 90s. An old
Robinsons local in the village been to once or twice. Quite pleasent as I recall. RAINOW
- I'd sometimes stop here for a pint when cycling or drive to for a meal when
I lived not too far away on the edge of the Cheshire Peak District. * HIGHWAYMAN
- Last visit: 2006. An isolated and very old whitewashed
stone pub high above the village on the Macclesfield - Whaley Bridge road selling
Thwaites bitters and good home made food. Small and cosy inside with several little
rooms, real fires and great views from its exposed location looking out across
the hills and over Cheshire far below. Photos STYAL
- years ago would have the odd walk here for a summer eve pint when I lived in
the area, more recently been here when visiting family * SHIP INN -
Last visit: 2005. An old country style pub with several
small cosy rooms and a more lively area by the bar. From my more recent visits
it seems to have improved with several beers sold including interesting guest
ales. SUTTON
LANE ENDS - came here very occasionally for a drive (or preferrably
when being driven) * HANGING GATE - Last visit:
late 90s. An old pub high on a ridge outside the village with great views
over Cheshire. Used to sell Jenning and Cains, believe it is now a Hydes pub.
Has a little bar area and a couple of larger rooms sloping down the hillside.
My only 'complaint' was it promoted itself as the highest pub in Cheshire (which
it isn't, the Cat and Fiddle & Stanely Arms are both higher), and the 5th
highest in the country (which it certainly isn't - many higher in the Peaks and
Pennines)! Still that's just me being pedantic - it was always well worth a visit
and sure it still is. I have also been in two others in the area incl the
Church House or Lamb (a little Boddies local) and another one lower down
where had a meal (Ryles Arms)? WARRINGTON
- went in a big bare floored pub near the Parr Hall before going to
see a band in the mid 1990s. WHITLEY
GREEN - a
place I used to venture out to now and again for a summer evening pint or a meal.
* WINDMILL - Last visit: late 90s. A
large old pub down a lane, your typical country dining type pub from what little
I can remember
WILMSLOW
- I used to live here (or nearby) until late 1990s and very
occasionally go back to a handful of pubs when seeing friends and
family.
* BLUE LAMP - Last visit: late 90s.
Converted from the old police station in the mid '90s to
a Banks pub, I rarely went in and is now closed down and
knocked down.
* BODDINGTON ARMS - Last visit: mid
90s. Big pub with hotel on the edge of town with Boddingtons
beer as you might expect [well it was, no idea now - it may even
be called something else]. Anyway, back in my day when I'd visit
here quite often (early 90s) it had a large beer garden and was
a busy place on a Fri and Sat night with a younger crowd and the
odd Coronation Street star. The hotel was later expanded and I've
not been near it for many years.
* BOLLIN FEE - Last visit: 2010.
A Wetherspoons bar in the town centre - very large with a mix of
modern and more traditional areas though a makeover in late 2010
has made it more cosy with lots of dark food, fireplace etc. The
usual W'spoons choice of ale, it's a place i've been to on occasions
early eve to eat and usually has some decent ales but I imagine
it gets packed with Wilmslow youths at times though so not somewhere
I'd want to be then.
* CARTERS ARMS - Last visit: 1999.
it was a small busy pub with quite a youthful crowd and different
seating areas round a central bar. In my early drinking days it
used to sell Wilsons and Websters beer which have long since gone,
then became a Boddington's house. Passing by in recent times I see
it's had the front altered to include large windows and a modern
bar style interior. Photo
* COACH AND FOUR -. see NEW INN
* FARMERS ARMS - Last visit: 2010.
A small traditional local in a residential area. 4 little rooms
- a basic vault, games room with darts, real fire and pairs of old
skis on the wall, the darkly lit main room with various objects
hanging from the ceiling beams and a cosy lounge. Was my favourite
Wilmslow pub when I lived in the area and it sold Boddingtons beer,
which was always good (also Boddies mild when it existed). Behind
is a large pleasant beer garden. I've visited a couple of times
since, not too much had changed but the main bar and lounge have
been opened out a bit, there's a jukebox & TV screens and now
4 ales, still Boddies plus a choice of ales from Lees on my last
visit. Photo.
* GEORGE AND DRAGON - Last visit: early
90s. Old fairly large pub near the even older church, though
nothing particularly of note inside or beer wise. I only went in
a few times and has been closed for several years now. Photo
* HOGSHEAD - Last visit: late 90s.
Opened the late 1990s in a former car showroom, a modern style glass
fronted bar. When I went in it was like other Hogsheads with a few
beers, but thnk it has now closed.
* HORSE AND JOCKEY - Last visit: mid
90s. A 1930s ? Greenhalls local (don't know what it sells
now) in residential area, a pool room, little public bar and a comfortable
lounge.
* KINGS ARMS - Last visit: 2012.
A large rebuilt brick Robinsons pub on edge of town (on the site
of an older pub), back in the early 90s it used to have a parrot!
Having not been in for over 10 years I've made the occasional more
recent visit to meet up with people for a quiz night, the parrot
is no more and the place has had a few alterations, nothing drastic
but it a bit smarter than it was. Has a few different comfortable
rooms with fake beams and wood panelling round a central bar plus
a seperate restaurant. 2 ales from Robbies including a seasonal
beer or at times another guest. photo
* KING WILLIAM - Last visit: 2010.
I only occasionally went in here in the early 1990s when it was
a small traditional Robinsons local. When I revisited for the first
time in 15+ years it had become a dining pub with a tapas theme,
the small rooms were still there but filled with dining tables and
the beams on the ceiling had fake vines! Still a Robbies pub with
a few of their ales.
photo
* NEW INN - now COACH AND FOUR - Last
visit: 2010. large Hydes pub in the town centre, refurbished
and renamed in the early 2000s? As the New Inn it was more of a
locals pub with several different drinking areas in a large dark
wood panelled room. It's since had a rustic style makeover with
beams, open fires etc and seems larger and more of a dining pub
but it's still divided up into several cosy areas to sit and have
a pint, sells a number of ales from Hydes.
Photo
* RECTORY - Last visit: 2010 -
large old rectory house converted to a pub in the early 90s. It
was a nightspot for posh obnoxious youths so I avoided it, but then
it became a chain pub so I gave it a try. Inside is quite smart
but with wood panels and various ares to sit. Real ales incl Landlord,
Bombidier etc. It was still busy and lots of posh cars outside,
but it was a Friday night in Wilmslow. Late 2010 I noticed it had
changed it's name to some sort of bistro.
* RIFLEMANS - Last visit: 2006 Large
brick 1950s ? former Boddingtons pub in residential area a long
walk from the town centre. I called in for first time in many years
in 2005 - it was now selling guest beers from independent breweries
and seemed a lively local with games being played in the traditional
vault and a band on in the large lounge room. photo
* SAMUEL FINNEY - Last visit: 1999
Opened in the '90s in the former Rex cinema, large with seating
on various levels including an upstairs area. Went in once or twice
but wasn't my sort of place with it's up market image, bouncers
and dress restrictions. Attracted too many Wilmslow type people!
* SWAN - Last visit: 2010. For
years a Boddingtons pub in the town centre and in the early 90s
I had many a good night in here with its jukebox, TV sport and occasional
live bands. The pub is opened out into one large L shaped room but
it still has a few peaceful corners and a real fire at one end with
a pool table and games machines at the other. In the mid 90s it
became the Swan Ale House with changing guest beers (good) and a
fake rustic style make over (no need). I hadnt been in since the
late 90s until a couple of brief visits in the laste 2000s - the
fake rustic stuff has gone, some of the seating has changed and
been opened out and there were 3 handpumps (but only 1 or 2 beers
on - Landlord and Everards Tiger). Photo
* UNICORN - Last visit: late 90s
On the edge of town at Dean Row, a nice old building but gutted
inside when refurbished and on my very infrequent visits it was
full of your loud mouthed Wilmslow clones with flash cars and shallow
personalities. And people I know have nearly been poisoned by being
served half cooked chicken and encountered couldnt care less service.
Maybe it's since changed for the better, but I''ve not been in to
find out .
* WILMSLOW FLYER - now SUMMERFIELDS. Last
visit: late 90s A pub built in the mid '90s on a new shopping
area in the Dean Row part of town, with a very silly name. Now changed
to reflect the nearby housing estate (sure residents call it an
executive development). Only went in once and have no lasting memories
of it.
