TO SOUTH INDEX . ESSEX
SOUTHEND - in 1990 had a quick pint
in a pub by the station when travelling round the country by train. So did the
train driver who'd just driven me here! ISLE
OF WHITE - visited briefly in 1990 during my travels
RYDE - had
a drink, lunch and played pool in a large pub while stuck on the island 'cos the
little ferry wasn't running due to rough seas.
LONDON

in recent years quite regularly due to work (which I make fun by
going to pubs).

at the front with river views, there's also a riverside patio. A
big choice of ales from London Pride to guest beers from various
breweries - part of the Nicholson pub chain photo

been the Founders Arms

HOLBORN
* CITTIE OF YORKE - Last visit: 2008
- very old (17th C ?) large pub, a corridor has doors to
a small bar and a cellar bar, neither of which I went in. Instead
I headed to the vast and impressive main bar at the back - a huge
barn like room with very high ceiling, lots of dark ornate wood,
archways and beams. There's lots of little booths to sit in along

* PRINCESS LOUISE - Last visit: 2008
- another Sam Smiths pub but with an even more impressive
interior. The large ornate central bar is surrounded by several
little drinking booths accessed via corridors on each side, all

fantastic pub interiors I've ever seen photo

opposite Baker St tube, a large pub with a big bare floored open

but I didnt venture up to see what that involves. Several expensive
ales, Youngs, Bombadier and so on
* HARCOURT ARMS - Last visit: 2009
- traditional pub, a dark wooden interior round a central

the reason I visited website
* METROPOLITAN - Last visit: 2011 -

more usual beers.
* WARGRAVE ARMS - Last visit: 2009

interior, seemed a traditional locals pub but was a bit lacking
in ales on my visit, just a couple of Youngs beers on with a couple
of empty handpumps. photo

* COACH & HORSES Bruton
Street - Last visit: 2008 - old looking
mock Tudor pub with stained glass windows etc, inside is a small

upstairs area I didnt visit. photo

GATE & KENSINGTON AREA
* ANGLESEA ARMS (South Kensington) - Last

including in small booths. There's also a restaurant area at the

!) photo

visit: 2010 - an excellent, cosy and very interesting pub
I've visited a few times. A traditional, dimly lit interior with
the bar near the front & seating down either side with a couple
of fire places and an unobtrussive TV showing sport. There's a choice
of Fullers ales and a mixed lively set of punters from foriegn visitors
to local 'characters'. But the thing that makes this a pub you wont
forget is the amazing collection of objects hanging from the ceiling,
chamber pots, old radios, lamps, jugs, rugby memerobilia, there's
not a bare bit of ceiling and hardly a blank bit of wall either
as they're covered with pictures, newspaper articles etc. And given
the pub name, lots of Winston related items too. photo

it was hammering down! Youngs and other more common ales, but also
a guest which was from Titanic. photo
website

a smart refurbished pub with an opened out room and more
of a dining sort of place, but Fullers ales and a guest beer. photo

up time! * CROWN - Last visit: 2002 - a
modern style bar but with some good beer (London Pride ?) * ROYAL OAK
- Last visit: 2004 -
a smallish busy lively local, Adnams and several other beers. And got talking
to a bloke who knows all about snakes, which interested me. . * WINDSOR
CASTLE - Last visit: 2004 - a big rambling pub
sat outside for a pint, seemed OK. EFFINGHAM
* LORD DOUGLAS HAIG - Last visit: 2004 - a
big long pub , can't remember what beer it sold but was a friendly down to earth
place. * PLOUGH - Last visit: 2004 - a
Youngs pub had a meal sat outside, seemed a nice comfortable rural style pub though
was very busy and have to say the food was overpriced for what it was, even by
Southern standards.
