TO SOUTH WEST INDEX . BRISTOL:
CITY CENTRE- spent a night here due to work
but a chaotic train journey down meant only had time for a quick pint in each
of the following: * BAG O'NAILS - Last visit:
2007 - a small basic traditional pub, bare wooden floors, several good
ales from small breweries - a decent no nonsense sort of place. * BUNCH
OF GRAPES - Last visit: 2007 - long narrow room,
interesting front with curved windows, obviously used for live music with a stage
and lots of music posters but very quiet and empty on my visit. Several West Country
real ales, jukebox but bloke serving was a rather odd chap who seemed to communicate
by grunting! * RECKLESS ENGINEER - Last visit:
2007 - right opposite the station approach, a bar beneath office buildings
with one open modern style room. A raised area with tables at the front, rest
of room quite bare and looks like it is a live music venue. 3 ? ales incl Otter
& Butcombe on my visit. - after these and after closing time ended up
in a modern bland bar cos it was the only place nearby still serving and also
doing food - might have been All Bar One, no real ale.
I also had a few
pints in Bristol a couple of times in the early 1990s but can't remember the names
of any pubs - one was opposite Temple Meads so possibly the Engineer, or whatever
it was called then, also went to a smaller pub where had food and at least one
other. CORNWALL:
all places here were visited on a holiday in 2003 BODMIN
- Last visit: 2003 - had lunch and a pint
in a pub here whose name I cant recall, it had a long bar with a cosy lounge area
and separate room and some local beers.
FOWEY
* GALLEON - Last visit: 2003 - an old but
nicely refurbished pub next to the harbour with some good local beers.
LANLIVERY
* CROWN - Last visit: 2003 - this was a very
nice old pub went to for a meal but it was fully booked, though had a good pint
sat outside.
LERRYN * SHIP
- Last visit: 2003 - an old pub with local beers,
sat in the beer garden for lunch.
LOSTWITHIEL
* EARL OF CHATHAM and * GLOBE Last
visit: 2003 - went in both these, can't remember which was which or a great
deal about them. * ROYAL OAK - Last visit: 2003
- old pub with several good beers on offer, a little front bar and separate dining
room with very good food, also a traditional lively back room for the locals and
those just wanting a pint. MEVAGISSY
* FOUNTAIN - Last visit: 2003 - a very old
pub with little separate rooms, lots of bare stone and flagstone floors etc, St
Austell beers. * SHIP - Last visit: 2003
- a long low ceiling pub with nautical memorabilia, had a good lunch here and
sold some local pints. POLPPERO
* THREE PILCHARDS - Last visit: 2003

of bits! DEVON:
MILTON
COMBE - stayed the night near here when visiting a friend on my way
to the Cornish holiday mentioned above! * WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT IT INN
- Last visit: 2003 - an old community local in the

decent meal. Photo
GLOUCESTERSHIRE: nr
BILDLIP stopped
here for a quick pint when passing by *
AIR BALLOON - Last visit: 2007 - a large chain
pub, real ale but not exciting incl the rather dull Green King IPA.
WILTSHIRE:
all these places visited once when down here seeing a friend who
lives in the area
AVEBURY
* RED LION - Last visit: 2007
- large old pub in the centre of the famous stone circle, I only
called in for a quick pint (Green King IPA). Has the old village
well inside one of the rooms, but otherwise seemed a bit run down

CRICKLADE *
RED LION - Last visit: 2007 - just had time
for a quick pint here from the bar lined with many handpumps, all offering interesting

* BOLINGBROKE ARMS - Last visit: 2007
- was taken here for something to eat. An old building with nice
beer garden, inside has been refurbished in a smart modern style.
A few real ales including guests from small breweries, and food
was good too
WOOTTON
BASSETT
* FIVE BELLS - Last visit: 2007
- spent a pleasant evening drinking here sat out in the large yard
at the back. Inside the thatched roof pub is a busy cosy local with
a couple of different rooms and selling a few beers including local
