* BIRCH HALL INN
- Last visit: 2005 - a unique historic pub I've been wanting to visit for years and finally have done. And I was not disappointed, two little rooms, one with just a serving hatch rather than a bar, seperated by a small shop. . Beer wise it has Black Sheep and a couple of guest beers, both from independent Yorkshire breweries on my visit. Serves pies and sandwiches at lunchtime but check out of season, friendly service and a beer garden up the slope at the side of the pub. photos

* CELLARS -
Last visit: 2011 - a bar beneath a large Victorian hotel building. Quite a large open plan area plus seperate lounge room, plenty of interesting ales including on my visit from various small Northern breweries. photo
* INDIGO ALLEY -
Last visit: 2008 - music & real ale bar judging by the live events advertised and the many pumpclips on display, on my visit 5 ales from Roosters and other small brewers. Dark wooden one roomed interior with lots of bar stools and a couple of corners to sit off to one side - seemed like my sort of place!   photo
* note
, I've since read it's changed owners and doesnt have the choice of beer it once had - shame.
* LEEDS ARMS
- Last visit: 2008 - [not to be confused with the nearby Leeds Hotel]. This is a small, traditional, cosy and on my visit busy old pub with a friendly local atmosphere. Lots of nautical objects and photos on display, 3 ales though the guest beer had run out so I had Landlord instead.  Photo

Thornbridge. photo  website
* OLD SCALBY MILLS - Last visit: 2008 - someway out of town but an enjoyable walk along the seafront at North Bay and worth making cos this is a fine little pub in
a scenic setting next to a river (it was once a watermill) and practically on the sea front with great views back towards Scarborough. A small seating area by the equally small bar and a larger room with bare stone walls. Also a few tables outside and on my visit were a mix of walkers, diners and locals.

* VALLEY BAR - Last visit: 2007 - on my brief visit I only went in the small basic but cosy cellar bar which is lined with handpumps selling many good beers, so I didnt see the games area and dining room which apparently are upstairs - for more see their website

SELBY - have been drinking round Selby a few times in the very late 1980s and early '90s when someone I know lived here, went in all manner of pubs from little locals to big bars but no idea what most of them were called or looked like, though I do recall the Cricketers and the Albion Vaults .

SETTLE - stayed here once
* GOLDEN LION - Last visit: 2000 - had a few pints in here, a nice old pub but pretty busy and food looked rather upmarket for my simple (and cheap) tastes!

TAN HILL - did a walk via here so I could visit this famous pub
* TAN HILL INN
-
Last visit: 2010 -. the highest pub in Britain in a very remote isolated position high on the moors. A stout old stone building with extensions giving a dining room and accommodation. The main bar room is as a pub like this should be, basic with bare floors and walls, real fire, beamed ceiling etc.  A few real ales from Black Sheep and Theakstons and its own house beer, though at 5% I didnt try it as I had a long way to walk!  photo   website

WHITBY - a great place I've stayed in or visited a few times, dont get to visit as often as I'd like.
* BLACK HORSE Last visit: 2011 - small very old 2 roomed pub, the interior was refurbished in Victorian times and remains the same. The front room is a little basic bare floored bar area with dark wood and old local photos while at the back is another bar serving an equally small cosy lounge room. There are 5 handpumps split between the two bars including the local Black Dog ale.   photo   website
* BOARD INN
Last visit: 2010 - below the 199 steps and backing onto the harbour, a basic bar area and side room with fireplace at the front and a more modern extention at the back with dining room and harbour view. Ales from Caledonian and Theakstons    photo

* PIER INN -
Last visit: 2005 - Near the harbour, a large opened out pub but with a few different areas to sit, seems to attract a younger crowd with sport on TV and a juke box. Tetleys and a guest beer
* SHAMBLES
- Last visit: 2011 - the entrance is easy to miss in a building shared with a marketplace, but a doorway leads upstairs to a large bright open bar in a modern style with low tables, sofas etc, wood panelling and beams. At the back is a conservatory style area and balcony overlooking the harbour, a nice place to sit watching the boats below. Sells a few real ales including Copper Dragon, also does good food.  photo    website
* STATION INN - Last visit: 2011 - large brick pub opposite the station with a main room and 2 small side rooms at the front, all with beams, bare brick, wooden floors and fireplace. A choice of ale with 8 handpumps including Whitby Abbey Ale and others both common and from smaller breweries. Lots of interesting local pictures and railway memerobillia on the walls  photo

YORK - perhaps my favourite English city, especially for pubs! I've had a few weekends and many day trips here over the years.
* ACKHORNE - Last visit: 2011 - hidden down a narrow cobbled lane off Micklegate, one long narrow room divided in the middle between the bare floored basic bar area and more comforatble seating and fireplace. Several handpumps, on my visits there's always been Roosters beers plus a varying number of other ales.  Photo
* ARTFUL DODGER- Last visit: 2010 - a busy bar with one long very narrow room (a real squeeze to get from one end to the other) and a wider area at the front with sofas and large TV screen. 3 ales, a couple from Black Sheep and Thwaites when I called in for the purpose of watching the footy results. Some interesting artwork on the walls
* BAY HOUSE (Marygate)
- Last visit: 2010 - large double fronted pub, one side set out for dining, the other has a smaller raised area with TV screen. An impressive choice of ales with 6 beers all from small breweries both Yorkshire and around the country [though I've read since the choice aint that good anymore]  Photo
* BLUE BELL
- Last visit: 2010 - fantastic interior to this little pub which is in a terrace of old buildings on Fossgate. Two small dark wood panelled rooms, fireplaces, a tiny bar in the middle with serving hatches for the back room and corridor. Snug, cosy if a little crowded when busy, which it usually is. Several handpumps with a good variety of ales, on my first visit most of these were quite common beers but more recently the majority were from the likes of Leeds, Ossett, Rudgate etc.  photo
* BOOTHAM TAVERN - Last visit: 2002 - a busy locals pub, called in to watch football on TV when staying nearby. Ale was Tetleys I think, maybe others.

One of the Market Town Tavern bars - for more see their website   photo

* CROSS KEYS - Last visit: 2010 - a large brick corner pub, refurbished and opened out inside with a small TV showing sports, seemed quite a locals pub despite being in a busy tourist area. 4 ales, nothing too unusual, Cally IPA and the like.    Photo
* EXHIBITION - Last visit: 2010 - just outside the walls near Bootham Bar, dark and comfy inside with seating around a central bar plus a large conservatory area at the back. Among more common ales was also a beer from York brewery.     Photo
* GOLDEN BALL - Last visit: 2007 - interesting Victorian pub with several rooms incl a games room, lounge, snug and a basic bar room selling a good number of ales including Leeds Pale on my visit. The pub is a little way from the city centre on the corner in a residential area, imagine it must be a good locals pub though was very quiet on the Sat evening I visited. Photo      website
* GOLDEN FLEECE - Last visit: 2010 - very old narrow fronted pub with a golden sheep hanging outside! Inside is a basic bare floored front bar area and a larger back dining room reached down a sloping corridor. A choice of ales from the York brewery, plus Landlord. The walls are lined with sketches and documents about York and the many ghosts which allegedly frequent the Fleece.   Photo  website
* GOLDEN LION - Last visit: 2010 - wide brick pub in the centre of the city with a large wooden floored open plan room filled with tables and chairs for dining. Plenty of ales including from smaller and unusual breweries.    Photo

* GUY FAWKES HOTEL - Last visit: 2010 - refurbished bar of a hotel in a smart but old fashioned style. There's the bar room, selling several ales from small local breweries such as York, Old Mill, Saltaire and Leeds, plus at least a couple of other rooms including a lounge with real fire and a dining area, all with bare floors, wood panels and darkly lit with candles and gas lighting.  Photo
* HABIT - Last visit: 2010 - cafe bar with a small bar room and equally little upstairs seating area, quite smart and bright but with ancient beams and there's a little roof terrace which I didnt try cos it was snowing. Came here as it sold all day breakfasts, it was OK but the portion wasnt vast! One handpump, on my visit the ale was Ruddles so not the most interesting of choices
* HARKERS - Last visit: 2010 - Converted from an old office building with a very large open main room with high ceiling and many ornate features though on my visit it was packed so I couldnt really see it properly. There's also at least one side room. Various real ales, most from more common breweries but also a couple of interesting guests  photo  website
* HOLE IN THE WALL - Last visit: 1998 ? - nr Bootham Bar, can't remember much about this one other than an old building with a few ales.
* JUDGES LODGINGS - Last visit: 2010 - the 'cellar' bar of a hotel, though it's not a real cellar as it's on the ground floor and has windows in some rooms. But very interesting with bare brick walls and vaulted ceilings.The small bar area is cosy and feels underground, there's also a larger room behind the bar and a brighter room with a fireplace. It has house ales from Great Heck plus other good guest beers and a welcoming landlord who told us the history of the building. Photo   website
* KINGS ARMS - Last visit: 1998 - a Sam Smiths pub but one with no cask beer. It's right by the river, the famous pub that's always under water on TV whenever York floods hence the basic bare floor interior. The heights of the many floods are marked on the walls inside photo.
* KO KO - Last visit: 2010 - a smart relaxed cafe bar, but interesting inside being a very old building with a tiny bar area and slightly larger side room. Very cosy with low ceilings, timber beams and continental beer posters of which it sells a big choice (of beers, not posters). For the likes of me there are 2 handpumps which were both selling ales from small Yorkshire breweries    photo
* LAMB & LION - Last visit: 2011 - next to Bootham Bar, an interesting building with the bar area being a small quite modern style room with bare floors and big windows but a maize of corridors lead to other rooms including a couple of cosy little wood panelled snugs and a smarter comfortable lounge. 4 ales all from micro breweries including a house beer from Great Heck. I ate here too, the food was good but small fancy portions rather than a plateful so not really my thing!  Photo
* LAST DROP INN - Last visit: 2010 - York Brewery pub on Colliergate, converted to a pub but traditional feeling with a bare wood floored seating area by the large windows and a raised flagstone area by the bar with plenty of bare brick and tall tables made from barrels. A nice relaxing place with the range of York's excellent beers. Photo    website
* LENDAL CELLARS - Last visit: 2010 - very interesting building but the beers aren't too exciting, just Green King & Hardy Hanson, and on my visit it was packed. But worth seeing the various cellar rooms on different levels with bare brickwork and arches, the very long low ceiling dining area is impressive. There's also lots of seating in the partly covered courtyard.   Photo
* LIGHTHORSEMAN - Last visit: 1998 - big Thwaites pub on main road south out of the city, stayed near here once and called in for a pint. An impressive interior, the main bar room having a high ornate ceiling and other features.
* MALTINGS - Last visit: 2011 - superb drinkers pub on Tanners Moat near the station, always a great range of beers including from small Yorkshire brewers. One fairly small room with bare wooden floors, a ceiling made up from old doors, lots of unusual objects and memorabilia around the place. Good value lunches of home made food with vast amounts of real chips. Can get crowded but good service and the starting point for most of my York pub crawls.  Photo   website
* MASONS ARMS - Last visit: 1998 - large mock Tudor style pub just beyond the city walls. From what I remember it had was divided into a couple of rooms, sold ales and I had a huge meal - perhaps the biggest portion I've ever seen!   photo
* MINSTER INN - Last visit: 2011 - a traditional pub with an unspolit multi room layout either side of a central corridor, though when I visited it was a quiet early evening and most rooms were shut and in darkness! So I sat in the small public bar which had a real fire going (the chimney breast is decorated with bottle corks), several ales from Marstons, Jennings, Banks etc.  The toilets area outside across a small yard  Photo
* OLD STARRE INNE - Last visit: 2010 - very old pub reached down a covered alleyway off Stonegate and with a famous sign spanning the street. Like most pubs in this area it can be busy with tourists and diners but beside the large L shaped room by the bar there are 3 other rooms including a little bare floored room and more comfy lounges with wood paneling, old fireplaces etc plus courtyard outside. Several real ales including interesting guests, on my most recent visit all the beers were from Wentworth brewery.  Photo
* OLD WHITE SWAN - Last visit: 2010 - large very old pub round a courtyard on Goodramgate made up from various buildings giving it a big rambling interior with various rooms and areas and some impressive old features, bare brickwork and ancient beams. Have been here years ago when the ale choice was average but on my last visit there were several beers from small and Yorkshire brewers, decent food too. Photo
* PIVNI - Last visit: 2010 - a small 'wine bar' type place in a very old timber framed building on a narrow side street. 2 cosy little rooms on different floors with exposed beams, and 3 or 4 real ales mostly from the Thornbridge brewery including its own Pivni ale which was very nice! Lots of continental beers too.     Photo
* PRIORY - Last visit: 2010 - a very old building on Micklegate though inside is nothing too exciting with one opened out room with TV and music. Also a seperate pool room. A few real ales including one from York brewery
* PUNCH BOWL Micklegate - Last visit: 2010 - a Wetherspoons pub so their usual food and a good choice of ales. An old brick building on a corner, inside is one room but different areas to sit and with bare brickwork and dark wood paneling
* PUNCH BOWL Stonegate - Last visit: 2010 - another very old building (though I believe the exterior Tudor look is fake). A small traditional and busy bar area at the front selling a few beers both common and a couple of interesting guests, tables for dining along a corridor and a back lounge room with TV screen, fireplace and all with dark wood and old beams   photo
* RED LION - Last visit: 2010 - yet another ancient pub (well we are talking about York), a white timber frame and slightly wonky building with an interesting interior, various rooms, cosy corners with fake 'real' fires and historic features. The ale choice was Black Sheep, Cally IPA & John Smiths. Photo
* ROOK & GASKELL - Last visit: 2007 - just outside the city walls and a bit of a walk from the centre but worth visiting for its long bar lined with handpumps, many beers from Castle Rock [it is owned by Tynemill who run Castle Rock brewery], York brewery and also other unusual beers. One large open refurbished room with bare wood etc plus conservatory and a ceiling lined with pumpclips    photo
* ROSE & CROWN - Last visit: 2007 - across t'road from the Rook. More of a locals pub, nothing too exciting but decent enough with a few different rooms and a number of ales, one from York brewery on my visit and a large TV screen in one room on which we watched the footy results. Photo
* ROYAL OAK - Last visit: 2000 ? - on Goodramgate, a long time since visited here, but it's an old pub with a few rooms, I remember sitting in the cosy back room where had a good meal, cant remember the beer. Photo
* SLIP INN - Last visit: 2010 - locals pub in a residential area with a small bar area at the front, larger room behind with a little seating area off to the side and outside a big yard, across which are the gents. All 5 ales were from small Yorkshire brewers such as Leeds, Rudgate, Wold Top etc and a nice friendly atmosphere.    Photo
* SNICKLEWAY INN - Last visit: 2010 - very old (and supposedly much haunted) pub on Goodramgate, several small rooms with fireplaces and lots of exposed beams. The front bar area is unusual with its high ceiling and windows into the first floor rooms. A number of ales including from Ossett & Marston Moor  photo
* SWAN - Last visit: 2010 - just outside the city walls, a corner locals pub which judging by my visit attracts a variety of punters, locals, students, tourists and ale fans due to its fine interior and beer choice. Has a large corridor area by the bar, basic public bar and at the back a more comfortable lounge. Beers were from Jarrow, Wharfbank and more. Good service despite being busy, I think it only opens tea time in the week (so check if planning to visit)   photo
* TAP & SPILE- Last visit: 2010 - a little walk beyond the walls but well worth it. An interesting shaped detached building, inside is a large open room with a raised area at the back with high ceilings, wood paneling etc. There's also a more comfy lounge at the front with fireplace. Excellent selection of ales from mostly Yorkshire micro breweries - Salamander, Rooster, Wharfbank etc and the all day breakfast I ordered was impressively large!    photo   website
* THREE LEGGED MARE - Last visit: 2010 - near the Minster on High Petergate, converted to more of a modern bar than traditional pub with a main room and conservatory area at the back. Owned by York Brewery so has their beers plus other small brewery guests and real lagers. Being this style of place the food menu is more 'trendy' than your usual pie and chips! Toilets down a very tricky steep spiral staircase, well it's certainly a challenge after a few pints...    photo   website
* THREE CRANES - Last visit: 2010 - traditional pub in the shopping area. Behind the double fronted tiled exterior with a large mosaic of a crane is the main bar room and a smaller comfy room behind, both lively and busy on my visit with more locals than tourists. A small choice of ales including a guest but I forget what! photo  website
* WAGGON & HORSES - Last visit: 2010 - near the Rook and Rose & Crown (above), not the most exciting looking pub by York's high standards but a decent place with a number of different rooms including with TV and small back room with sofas. A fine choice of ales, 4 from Batemans and 4 guest which included Roosters and Wold Top.  photo
* WHITE HORSE - Last visit: 2004 - substantial Thwaites pub just outside the city walls at Bootham Bar, went here once to watch football.
* YORK ARMS - Last visit: 2002 - Sam Smiths pub near the Minster, from what I remember it has a small wood panelled front vault and a more conventional lounge. photo
* YORKSHIRE HUSSAR - Last visit: 2011 - a large brick pub, inside are several rooms from larger lounge areas to the more basic bar area, all a mix of traditional but quite smart and refurbished. Several handpumps but only 2 ales on my visit, one was a guest beer from Brains, but various upcoming ales were advertised. Photo
* YORKSHIRE TERRIER - Last visit: 2010 - another conversion to a York brewery pub, this one on Stonegate. The pub itself is behind the York brewery shop which sells bottled York beers and other souviners. But back to the pub you'll find many beers from both York and other Yorkshire brewers. Has a narrow bar area with seating, and a larger room behind both nicely done out in a traditional style with interesting posters and photos on the wall.   photo    website
