VARIOUS STUFF - RAILWAY PHOTOS

I blame it all on going to a school next to a railway line! For a want of something to do during school dinnertimes I begun noting down numbers of passing trains, this led to meeting other people who did the same and ending up on a slippery slope of travelling to new places to see new trains, then trying to ride behind different engines and ultimately a quest to travel the entire BR network. These are some photos from those days in the 1980s to early '90s.

By the early 1990s I gave up trains as a hobby but over time I did have the odd trip out again for old times sake and to meet friends, plus occasionally took my camera with me to work in Manchester or elsewhere during the late 1990s and early 2000s. If you've found this page by searching then I assume you must have some interest in railways and hope it brings back some memories, if you've ended up here by accident or curiosity then it probably wont mean much to you!

To avoid a long list of subjects I've divided it up into broad headings as listed below, though there's quite a lot of cross over between them as many photos could appear under more than one topic - so why not look through them all!   

* RECENT PHOTOS: from 1995 to early 2000s
photos since I 'gave up' being interested in railways! Mostly from the late 1990s - early 2000s and many taken in and around Manchester but also a few from other times and places. For recent photos from preserved railways see the 'preserved railway' section below.

* STATIONS, DEPOTS & LINESIDE PHOTOS: from 1984 to 1991
photos taken during my years stood on stations and visiting railway depots and works in the period 1984 - 1988. There are some photos from later years up to 1991, though for more many pictures from mid 1988 onwards also see the 'haulage...' section below. This section also includes 'lineside' photographs, often from where I used to live at Wilmslow in north Cheshire.

* HAULAGE & RAIL ROVERS: from mid 1988 - 1992
this section contains pictures of engines I'd ridden behind while out getting haulage (or 'bashing' as it was known for some reason) from mid 1988 onwards. You'll also find photos taken while travelling round the country on rail rovers - not just of engines I'd ridden behind but also of other trains seen on my travels.

* RAILTOURS & RAIL DAYS etc: from 1988 - 1992
photos of railtours I travelled on and events such as rail days.

* PRESERVED RAILWAYS & DIESEL GALAS: from 1986 to early 2000s
photos on visits to preserved railways, mostly made during 'diesel galas' and similar events.
