VARIOUS STUFF - NORTH WALES CLASS 37s - page 01
BACK TO INDEX

In 1996 I had my first trip out on the trains for several years (just for old times sake!), spending a day riding behind class 37s on the North Wales coast. Then in 1999 & 2000 I had a few more trips out to ride on and photograph the 37s before they finished on the coast trains at the end of 2000. For more photos of 37s on these trains see the Rhosneigr and Manchester pages.

On 16 August 1996 I had my first rail enthusiast type day out in 4 years! This is 37420 on the 1023 Bangor - Crewe seen at Colwyn Bay.

Later the same day is 37408 at Holyhead on the 1323 to Crewe.

It was not until over two and half years later that I next photographed the coast 37s. I found myself waiting for a train at Crewe with camera in hand when I recorded 37401 on the 1423 Birmingham New Street - Holyhead. 20 March 1999.

Also seen was 37421, arriving on the 1354 Holyhead - Birmingham.

In May 1999 due to a shortage of 37/4s several more interesting 37s came out to play, so I had a day on the coast to have a look. This is 37377 on standy at Chester, 29 May 1999. Sadly it didn't work any trains that day.

This is what I really went to ride behind, 37413 which had been sent from Scotland to help out and was my last 37/4 for haulage. Not that it mattered, I was supposed to have given up years ago but it was nice to get it! Seen at Llandudno Junction, 29 May 1999 on the 0810 Birmingham - Bangor.

One of the more usual engines still in action was 37429, at Rhyl on the 1007 Birmingham - Holyhead.

37298 running round the 1220 from Crewe at Holyhead, 29 May 1999.

37415 on standby at Chester, 5 July 1999.

37426 working the 1721 Birmingham New Street - Holyhead, Chester 5 July 1999.

There were still some rare 37s working in July 1999, this is 37058 leaving Chester with the 1820 Bangor - Crewe, 05/07/1999.

And finally from 5 July, this is 37057 at Crewe on the 1822 Holyhead - Birmingham.
