VARIOUS STUFF - ALL LINE ROVER SUMMER 1990

My second All Line Rover was done in July/August 1990. Perhaps I should have spent the time riding behind class 37s in Scotland instead rather than travelling new routes in the south of England, but it was an eventful week.

On 29 July 1990 73202 stands at Gatwick Airport with the 1305 to Victoria.

37404 at Glasgow Queen Street having brought in ECS, 30 July 1990. During summer 1990 many rare class 37s were working passenger trains out of Inverness, Aberdeen and Perth but I never covered them...

Instead I did exciting things like ride this class 318 unit to Ardrossan Harbour, the last bit of passenger track I needed in Scotland.

The next day and another branch line done, this being Tilbury Riverside in Essex, 31 July 1990.

A couple of days that week were spent covering routes in Essex and East Anglia but rather than show you the delights of places such as Southend here is a far more interesting view at Ipswich with 37013 and 37055 on 1 August 1990.

Two EMUs at Littlehampton, 2 August 1990.

3 August 1990 was the hottest day ever in the UK (reaching 37.9 C). After suffering in the heat travelling around the south east I gave up and endured an unbearably hot and overcrowded HST to Westbury for a 37 hauled train to Newport. This is Newport in the evening with 37263, 37887 and others.

I spent the night of 3 - 4 August 1990 on Birmingham New Street. Just after midnight 20025 and 20096 pass through on an engineering train. As the night went on I watched the departure sceens showing three trains from the north getting later and later until one of them vanished off the screen with no announcment.

The reason was an accident at Stafford when the 2218 Man Picc - Penzance was hit in the rear at Stafford by an empty class 310 EMU, sadly killing the driver. This is the recovery operation at Stafford station on 4 August 1990.

Another view of the clear up at Stafford.

I travelled up the WCML and on to Dumfries where i had 37375 into Carlisle on the 1040 from Ayr, 4 August 1990.

Thanks to being on an all line rover I was then able to head to Derby where rumour was 56060 was due to arrive dragging an HST on the 1700 St Pancras - Sheffield. I had doubts the 56 would work all the way but it did and is seen on arrival at Sheffield.
