Despite getting interested in trains in late 1982 and living only 12 miles south of Manchester I didn't visit Victoria station until early 1986. I found it a fascinating place compared with the electrified services south of the city I was more used to, with it's variety of diesel hauled passenger trains, various freight workings and interesting surroundings, and I became a regular visitor.


45111 stands at platform 12 with the the 1300 Bangor - York alongside 31282, 20 February 1986.


On the same day parcels unit 920 (former class 127 DMU) rolls into the station past 31282. There was always an engine (usually a 31) parked here to bank trains up the steep incline to Miles Platting when needed (not often), do a bit of shunting etc.

A smoky pair of 31s, 31233 and 31183 head west through Victoria on a Trans Pennine tanker trains. Note the snow and ice on the 31s, it was a cold and snowy February in the Pennines. 20 Feb 1986.

45143 approaches Victoria with 0933 (Sun) Liverpool - York on 23 February 1986.


Scottish 37027, with 37083 enters Man Vic with a westbound 'Peakstone' train, 26 March 1986.


A class 504 unit arrives on a train from Bury, the line to Bury is now part of the Metrolink tram network.

56108 accelerates through the central road at Manchester Victoria on an eastbound MGR train, 26 March 1986.

On the same day class 25/9s 25912 and 25911 at Victoria while working a tanker train to Stanlow.

47629 with a short engineering train on 26 March '86.


Class 45 'Peak' 45113 arrives on the 1003 Liverpool - Scarborough, 26/03/86 passing the platform of the former Manchester Exchange station.
