| In 1988 I made my first railway visits to Scotland, apart from brief trips to Edinburgh in 1986. In February 1988 I had a day trip to Glasgow, then in the summer I did my first 'Freedom of Scotland' rover with the aim of travelling as much of the country as possible but especially the West Highland and Far North Lines before the class 37s finished working. Then in December I spent a few more days in Scotland trying to get any 37/4s I missed in the summer. | |

The main reason for my visit to Glasgow was to travel behind my first Scottish class 37/4, albeit just for a quick leap to Dumbarton. Loco was 37424, seen here at Queen Street with the 1120 to Oban, 27/02/1988. |

47713 at Glasgow Queen Street on 27 Feb 1988 having arrived on the 1105 from Aberdeen. |
On the West Highland Line for the first time. The view from the overnight service from Euston as it heads off the Horseshoe curve behind 37407 on 8 August 1988. |
Rannoch station on 8 August 1988 as 37403 arrives on the 0840 Fort William - Glasgow passing 37407 on the overnight. By this time the overnight train was around 1 hour late due to brake problems with a coach which delayed us at Glasgow |
Because of the late running I missed the Mallaig service I'd planned to catch from Fort William, but we were allowed to travel in the back coach of the steam special instead seen crossing Glenfinnan viaduct. |
I travelled back from Mallaig on the 1230 to Fort William, seen here near Corpach with Ben Nevis in the background. |
